A New Hampshire woman told CNN this week that she won’t get vaccinated against the novel coronavirus because she doubts she would be seriously harmed if she contracted the disease.

During a segment about vaccine skepticism in the United States, CNN spoke with nursing assistant Seouquia Downs about her reluctance to take the vaccine.

“I feel like if I was to get sick, I’d get a natural immunity to it,” she said. “It wouldn’t be as detrimental to me as someone else.”

Mass vaccination campaigns aren’t just about personal protection for individuals, as viruses are far less likely to spread to the population as a whole the more people get vaccinated.

The CNN segment notes that polling shows that nearly half of Republicans say they will not consider getting vaccinated, and that this could hurt the United States’ ability to reach the important threshold for herd immunity against COVID-19.
