On Fox News Monday, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), under fire for his
controversial remarks that he would have been scared of Black Lives Matter storming the U.S. Capitol, as opposed to Trump supporters who “loved this country,” insisted that people are overreacting to what he said.
In conversation with Fox anchor Maria Bartiromo, Johnson insisted that his comments about the Capitol riot were “blown out of proportion” and there was “nothing racial” about what he said comparing Black Lives Matter to pro-Trump insurrectionists.
Commenters on social media were not impressed by Johnson’s denial, and were quick to bury him in scorn and criticism.
Lord God, @SenRonJohnson is so skewed into right wing disinformation that it’s disgusting. I’m old enough to remember when Rs protected voting rights, voted against racism in all its forms, & voted to expand the right to vote.
The GOP lost its heritage by adopting racism. https://t.co/NFaTru2EuQ

Nothing racist at all about blaming #BLM for your constituents on #January6th https://t.co/TXtdubKp3q

What’s racist about saying white supremacist terrorists are fine but black lives matter protesters are scary? https://t.co/Ictuk6Uahz

RonAnon speaks, denying his own deep-seated racism, which of course nullifies it, and means it’s just not possible that racism could even exist in this country. https://t.co/sR7YMIYz8m

If I may invoke Larry the Cable Guy, if you say you’re not afraid of a violent mob because they are white but would be afraid if they were black, you might just be a racist. #RacistRonJohnson https://t.co/aJoNqH1UNz

If you have to tell people that you didn’t say anything racist, I’ll damn sure guarantee you that you said something racist. And if you’re saying something racist that makes you a racist.
Ron Johnson is a racist. ( and a Russian asset )

I’m white. He said he would feel safe with Trump patriots. Tell that to the W officer who died. Tell that to the 149 officers who got injured, many Black. AND Black folks & Antifa DIDN”T attack the Capitol White men did. I heard them on video & I would have been afraid of them!

Excusing the Trump-fueled riot as not indicative of law-abiding Trump supporters isn’t just a race take. It’s a bad faith and short-sighted lie about the potential violence the GOP has enabled and unleashed–a risk not just to the country, but to themselves.

I’m not a racist is exactly what every racist has said. It’s been my experience that if you have to tell someone you aren’t something then you very likely are. This applies to your words too.
